Three men face charges after police said they followed them using a Police Service Dog, remotely piloted aircraft, and officers from four different detachments on a chase through a wooded area.
According to police, on June 20, at about 12:30 AM, Ste Rose du Lac RCMP were called to an abandoned pickup truckĀ on Provincial Road 278, near Road 127N, in the RM of Alonsa. This vehicle had been stolen on June 13 and reportedly driving erratically in and around the Ebb and Flow First Nation earlier in the evening. Police said they received information that suspects in the vehicle may have been armed.
While en route, police said their officers got another call saying suspects had left the vehicle and headed into the woods, going toward the lake. Officers from Dauphin, Amaranth, Winnipegosis, Police Dog Services (PDS) and RCMP Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS), helped in the search.
In their release, RCMP said PSD Marook tracked two male suspects through the wooded area for nearly four kilometers. In the end, police said they were located and arrested without incident.
Later that morning, at about 8:30, Ste. Rose du Lac RCMP heard the third suspect was now walking along Kinosota Road. When police arrived, they found and arrested the 28-year-old male suspect without incident. Police allege, however, that once taken into custody the suspect began to utter threats towards the officers and cause damage within the police vehicle.
RCMP have charged Mathew Kakewash, 31, Shawn Francoeur, 26, and Brady McKay, 28, with numerous offences including Uttering Threats, Possession of Property Obtained by Crime, Flight from Police and Operate a Conveyance in a Dangerous Manner. All three were remanded into custody. They are presumed innocent.
