Details haven’t been released yet, but the Brandon Chamber of Commerce says there was a strong response to it’s public surveys on the possibility of a direct flight from Brandon to Toronto. The surveys examined local interest
including flight time preferences and acceptable price points. The Chamber’s president told the Brandon Sun discussions are underway with an potential carrier.

As evacuated residents of Lynn Lake arrived in Brandon over the weekend, another northern town is being told to get ready to flee a nearby wildfire. Officials in Leaf Rapids announced Sunday that an evacuation is “likely expected”. Both fires remain out-of-control.

At least seven homes on a First Nation in northeastern Manitoba have been destroyed by wildfire. The blaze had forced nearly 200 people on Tataskweyak Cree Nation, also known as Split Lake, to evacuate to nearby Gillam.

Manitoba Public Insurance is giving more time to wildfire evacuees to renew their documents. Driver’s licences, vehicle registrations, insurance and identification cards with expiry dates on or after May 23rd, and before September 1st, will be valid until the end of September.

According to the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, the move to break down internal trade barriers in Canada is just ‘political theatre’. Their report is out just ahead of a trade ministers meeting this week. The Centre says the steps taken by Ottawa and the provinces will do little to mitigate the U-S tariff threat or significantly boost the economy.

A time capsule buried at Brandon City Hall almost 25 years ago was unearthed last Friday. There were a number of items inside including a city map, a VHS tape of a news program and noon-hour show from defunct TV station CKX – and a CD from world-renowned local violinist James Ehnes. The items had been placed inside a used artillery shell and wrapped in a plastic bag from Walmart.
