As part of an effort to bring “a greener, more resilient urban landscape” to Brandon, the City of Brandon has announced they are offering a rebate to homeowners for eligible tree purchases when the tree is planted on their residential property.
According to a release from the city, homeowners can get up to $300 in reimbursement. To qualify, they must choose tree species that are native or well-suited to Brandon’s climate (a list of acceptable tree species is available on brandon.ca), follow city guidelines to ensure safe planting locations, and avoid planting on city property including sidewalks, boulevards, or parks.
The city said people can apply for pre-approval to confirm the proposed tree species meets the requirements. Then, homeowners can purchase and plant the tree, then submit proof of planting for reimbursement. Once all the steps are completed, that reimbursement should take four to six weeks.
“By participating, residents not only enhance the beauty of their yards and neighborhoods—they also contribute to cleaner air, reduced energy costs through shade
coverage, and a stronger local ecosystem that supports biodiversity,” said Perry Roque, Director of Parks & Recreation Services. “This initiative empowers residents to be active stewards of Brandon’s environment while enjoying the long-term benefits trees bring to their homes and community.”
The City also said in their release that participants are expected to maintain their tree for at least two years after planting.
