Dry conditions in many regions in Manitoba have been worrying farmers, and at least one WestMan community is facing conditions troubling enough to declare a state of emergency.
In a post on their Facebook page, the Municipality of Glenella-Landsdowne declared a state of agricultural emergency due to severe drought conditions affecting crops, hay land, and pasture. The declaration officially came down on July 29.
“The lack of rainfall has caused a critical shortage of feed and has created a devastating situation for local farmers,” reads the Facebook post, “with high costs import feed from other regions. Council is urgently requesting immediate support from the Government of Canada and Province of Manitoba including tax deferrals, feed shortage assistance, and freight support.”
As of this writing, Environment Canada does not have any rain in the forecast for the village of Glenella until Tuesday, August 5. Like much of the rest of the province, they are currently under an air quality advisory for wildfire smoke.
