A Woman was killed by her brother in a mass stabbing on Hollow Water First Nation-that’s about 160 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg. Multiple people were also stabbed Thursday. The RCMP say the suspect is identified as 26-year-old Tyrone Simard, who later died in fatal car crash with Police. The 18-year-old woman who was killed, was Simard’s sister. 7 other community members were ALSO injured; the victims ranged in age from 18 to 60. The female Mountie responding to the attacks was also seriously injured when her vehicle and the one Simard was driving, crashed around 6:50 am, yesterday. She is expected to make a full recovery.

A new police chief has been appointed for the Manitoba First Nations Police Service. That now ends a national search for a candidate since the death of the former chief. Jason Colon was named to the top position Wednesday. He steps in after serving as interim chief since January. The MFNPS oversees detachments in nearly a dozen First Nation communities across Manitoba. A swearing-in ceremony will be held at a later date.

Brandon City Council has awarded another contract for repairs to the North Hill Sportsplex. The Bdn Sun says council approved a $96-thousand dollar contract to Brandon Heating and Plumbing. They will install a hydronic pre-heating coil for the Sportsplex pool, which will heat up air protecting a separate unit prone to freezing. Council budgeted $65-thousand for the project early this year, leaving a shortfall of over $31-thousand dollars.
