67 students, displaced by wildfires in northern Manitoba, have signed-up with Brandon School Division. The division had made plans to accommodate up to 160 evacuee students with Riverview and King George schools as the main sites. High schoolers will go to Neelin and Vincent Massey.

Organizers of the Westman Multicultural Festival in Brandon have announced a couple of new events this fall. ‘Welcoming Week’ at Stanley Park is on September 20th. It’s a chance for newcomers to connect with the community. And beginning in October, ‘The Global Cafe’ series of activities will take place at the Multicultural Centre. The Multicultural Festival itself is next February.

Manitoba premier Wab Kinew is still tops among the country’s premiers. His approval rating sits at 61% followed by Nova Scotia’s Tim Houston at 53%. Kinew, who’s slipped 7-points from an all-time high in June, had received criticism for delaying the Spruce Woods byelection, and for spending more than $300 million dollars in Westman prior to the vote.

Prime Minister Mark Carney and his Liberal caucus are in Edmonton for two days of planning meetings ahead of Parliament’s return next Monday. They’re expected to talk about trade and economic issues and the push to launch major industrial projects.

Organizers of an awareness campaign on the issue of labour trafficking in the Canadian trucking industry call it ‘modern-day slavery’. The Joy Smith Foundation and the Manitoba Trucking Association say in some cases wages are stolen, documents are withheld, and untrained drivers are pushed into unsafe conditions. They encourage suspected trafficking be reported to Crimestoppers.

The province’s Conservative party is pushing for bail reform after a man accused in a fatal crash near Portage la Prairie reportedly left a treatment centre without permission. The crash killed a 28-year-old woman, and 25-year-old James Hilton was charged with numerous offences. At the time of crash, RCMP had warrants out for his arrest for failing to comply with a release order.

Apple’s next generation iPhones were rolled out on Tuesday including a new ultra-thin model. All four new iPhone 17’s, to hit stores September 19th, will feature better cameras, longer-lasting batteries and double the storage. Model prices will range from $1,00 to almost $3,000 Canadian.
