Expanding Manitoba’s Port of Churchill was not on the list of major ‘nation building’ projects Ottawa wants to fast-track. The government says it’s still interested, but the plan needs more development. Among the $60-billion in new initiatives announced Thursday are expanding the Port of Montreal, doubling LNG production in BC, and a new copper and zinc mine in Saskatchewan.

The Manitoba government is providing over $55,000 to upgrade two provincial trails in Westman: a section of the Trans-Canada Trail through Erickson, and installing creek crossing pads on a trail in the Porcupine Provincial Forest north of Swan River. 11 organizations in total will receive nearly $600,000 for trail projects.

Manitoba Hydro has restored power to a number of northern communities affected by wildfires including Pukatawagan, Leaf Rapids, and Lynn Lake. Hydro says the repairs, costing about $32-million, are two to four weeks ahead of schedule. More than one thousand power poles and other equipment had been damaged.

There are seven people in the running for school trustee in Brandon’s Ward 1. The spot opened when Brian Foley resigned in March. The candidates are Laura Armitage, Michael Grantham, Bonnie-Lynn Mills, Shawna Mozdzen, Eren Oleson, Himanshu Shah, and Henry Sieklicki. The byelection is October 16th.

Steinbach, in southeast Manitoba, was clobbered by a storm Thursday night that dumped 103 mm of rain in just fours. Once it stopped, the total was around 135 mm. The water turned streets into lakes and flooded basements and businesses.

The union for Canadian postal workers says it’ll lift its overtime ban on Monday, and instead stop delivering commercial flyers. The overtime ban had been in place since May as the union fights for a new contract. Their latest proposal to the corporation called for higher wages – Canada Post says it’s bleeding money.

There’s a real fear the introduction of artificial intelligence in the federal government will lead to “some” job cuts in the public service. Ottawa’s chief data officer says the impacts will likely vary widely and will be job-specific, but wouldn’t identify what those might be. This summer, the government signed a deal with an AI company to make the public service more efficient.

U.S. law enforcement has reportedly captured a suspect in the killing of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk who was shot to death during an appearance at a Utah university on Wednesday. The State’s governor says 22-year-old Tyler Robinson of Utah, a sheriff’s son, was taken into custody last night.
