The Manitoba government is providing $100,000 in funding for the Western Manitoba Women’s Centre which had its grand opening in Brandon on Thursday. The money will help add programming and increase capacity at the facility on Rosser Avenue. The centre provides a safe space for women, gender-diverse people and their children.

The Manitoba Metis Federation is looking to build 30 to 40 housing units in the Brandon area in the next two years. MMF Housing Minister Will Goodon told yesterday’s Chamber of Commerce luncheon the project would include seniors and affordable housing, and as part of economic reconciliation would employ Metis professionals.

The Manitoba First Nations Police Service is implementing body-worn cameras, and the roll-out will start at the OCN detachment. The police service’s chief says the technology will help provide valuable evidence for investigations, and ensure both officers and community members are protected.

The province will help Brandon School Division cover the costs of taking in over 60 extra students who were evacuated by wildfires this year. The division says its paying around $100,000 for additional substitute teachers
and equipment, and a bus driver and gas for a new route.

A ‘Climate Matters’ rally is to be held at Brandon City Hall this afternoon to demand more action on protecting the environment. Organizers want to encourage local and provincial politicians to bring forward policies to create equitable and sustainable development. The event is to begin at 4:30 pm.

There’s a free event on Saturday at Brandon’s Stanley Park showcasing the city’s cultural diversity. Westman Immigrant Services and the Multicultural Festival Society are hosting ‘Cultural Connections’. It’ll feature pavilions highlighting traditions and stories from around the world, live performances, a free barbecue and activities for the kids.
