The Manitoba government says it’s making it easier for drivers to stay safe and informed with the installation of 20 new permanent digital message boards and 19 highway cameras across the province.
In a media release, Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Lisa Naylor said, “These upgrades are about more than technology, they’re about safety. We’re giving Manitobans the real-time information they need to make smart travel decisions, especially when weather and road conditions change quickly.”
The new digital message boards will be placed along major routes including Provincial Trunk Highway (PTH) 1, 1E, 6, 75, 100 and 101, near Emerson, Portage la Prairie, Thompson, Winnipeg and other key locations. These boards will display live updates on traffic delays, road closures, detours and weather-related advisories. Each board is remotely controlled and updated instantly to keep drivers informed.
Installation began in July, with the system expected to be fully operational by later this fall, the minister noted.
To complement the message boards, 19 new cameras will be installed along high-traffic corridors. These cameras will capture road conditions every 15 minutes, with images uploaded to the Manitoba511 website and app, the minister added.
