Letters and parcels will begin moving soon. The union for Canada Post workers says it’s switching from a countrywide strike to rotating strikes starting Saturday morning. The decision was made despite hearing from the minister for Canada Post this week that changes to operations will not be rolled back. Another meeting is planned for next week.

A Brandon man and a Boissevain woman have been arrested in a string of mail box thefts in rural communities dating back to last November. 38-year-old Ryan Eckberg and 41-year-old Jennifer McDonald each face 41 charges. RCMP believe they broke into mail boxes in 12 communities including Neepawa, Minnedosa, MacGregor and Carberry.

There are plans to build one of the world’s largest direct-air-capture facilities in southwest Manitoba early next year. Montreal-based carbon removal company Deep Sky has narrowed its choices to the RM’s of Pipestone and Two Borders because of their underground geology and access to clean hydro power. The $200-million facility would eventually remove up to 500,000 tons of carbon dioxide a year from the atmosphere.

The national rate of unemployment was unchanged in September and remains the highest it’s been in four years. The rate was 7.1%, unchanged from August. Stats-Canada says the labour market added an unexpected 60,000 jobs in September, led by gains in the tariff-struck manufacturing sector.

Ahead of the fall budget next month, Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced a series of affordability measures. He says the government is committing to make tax filing easier, protect the school food program, and lower costs for families travelling over the holidays. These same commitments were made during the spring election campaign.

Montreal bike sharing company ‘BIXI’ has landed in Time Magazine’s ‘Best Inventions Hall of Fame.’ The magazine says the company, which started in 2008, revolutionized the trend which has been replicated in other major cities. The other innovations highlighted were the ’23andMe DNA test’, ‘YouTube’, and the ‘iPhone’.
