-Prairie Mountain Health is successfully recruiting nurses to work in Brandon’s future critical care center. Nurses from Nova Scotia, Ontario and Saskatchewan have shown interest in the 30 online positions to work in the new building. Manitoba’s Health Minister said the critical care center is a major investment in providing better patient support for Brandon and the Westman area. The facility is scheduled to open early next year.

-A small part of McTavish Avenue in Brandon is set to be permanently closed. This, after a unanimous decision was made during a council meeting December 15th. Why? To allow easier access to the Brandon Police Service Headquarters. The Council said BPS headquarters is often completely full, and the new road closure would allow 15 new parking spaces on the road, and 17 new spaces on existing BPS land.

-Manitoba’s police watchdog has cleared a Brandon Police officer after he pushed an uncooperative man into a cell, hitting his head on the concreate and losing consciousness. A report released Monday from the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba showed the man got a three centimeter cut to his head. The subject officer’s notes said the man was “Intoxicated and belligerent” after leaving a birthday party. The civilian director who finished the report found the officer “reasonable in his action”.

-The Rural Municipality of Prairie Lakes rescheduled a public forum about the one-boat, one-lake policy introduced this year. The town hall has been moved to February 15th at 2pm, originally planned for early January. It was rescheduled due to the municipality falling behind on work over the holidays, as well as cold a flu season.

-Brandon Transit is giving free bus rides for people on New Years Eve. The city said free rides are from 6pm New Years Eve to 3am New Years Day for all transit routes, plus access transit, which will only run from 9am to 7pm on new years day.

-The Canadian revenue agency says it gave out $14 billion dollars in Covid related benefits to people that weren’t entitled to it, because they didn’t meet income requirements. CRA started asking for repayments in 2022, with $4 billion dollars being paid back so far, leaving $10 billion outstanding. The agency says it may take legal measures to recover the debt, like offsetting refunds, future credits, and garnishing wages.
