Brandon School Division is proposing a 7.25% property tax hike. A funding shortfall is the reason, but it could have been– a double digit hike. That means an average single-family residential home, with an assessed value of $301,300 would pay an extra $138.49 in property taxes before provincial tax credits are applied. Public consultation on the proposed 2026-27 budget will be held Monday, March 2, the final plan will be passed on March 9.

Traffic lights installed at a fatal intersection at the corner of Highway 110 and Richmond Avenue East in Brandon; will finally be activated this summer. 1-person was killed in a three-vehicle collision in 2021; this intersection has HAD a history of serious collisions. The lights have been covered to date; due to a delay on additional components, the estimated cost is $10.5 million. Brandon’s Mayor says the upgrade came, after the city requested it, about two years ago.

Canada is sending $8 million in food aid to Cuba, where a U.S. oil blockade has triggered a humanitarian crisis. The money will be delivered through United Nations agencies instead of the Cuban government. The island lost its main source of fuel in January. That’s when the U.S. took control of Venezuela’s oil reserves, with Washington threatening more tariffs on thosecountries sending Cuba fuel.
