The Manitoba government has introduced Bill 14; “a whistleblower law” that includes provincial government, health authorities and school division-employees. It means that “employers” who’ve been accused of taking action against a whistleblower; would be forced to prove their innocence. Currently, people must prove they were laid off, demoted or otherwise punished; “because” they HAD reported wrongdoing. The Manitoba ombudsman office counted 24 disclosures and five investigations in fiscal 2024-25.

A late-season snowstorm brought a much-needed moisture boost to the Prairie farmers last week. Saskatchewan and Alberta got up to 15 cm’s of snow ;with lighter snowfall here in southern Manitoba. Farmer say moisture from late winter and early spring; is important; after several dry years in the region.

The Brandon Islamic Centre is planning to acquire land just outside the City of Brandon for a new mosque and community facility. The Brandon Sun says the “proposed development” would be located on about 3.55 acres at the southeast corner of First Street and Patricia Avenue; in the Rural Municipality of Cornwallis; estimated costs: $3 million or more. The current mosque on 10th Street has struggled to keep up with demand; the Centre’s search for a larger space has been ongoing for many years.

The city of Dauphin wants the province to reroute it’s provincial highway. That’s because it’s running through it’s downtown, and it’s hurting tourism. Dauphin’s economic manager, says rerouting the highway is a “no-brainer kind of solution; to revitalize the area and make the road safer. The Brandon Sun says that the Province supports the change in principle, the cost could run more than $1-million dollars.

Manitoba’s P-C party has nominated, and announced several Westman M-L-A’s to run in the next provincial election. The acclamation of MLA Jodie By-ram, Party leader and MLA Obby Khan, MLA Wayne Eewasko; and MLA Jeff Bereza was also nominated. The provincial election is October 20

At The Oscars last night: “One Battle after Another” was the big winner, taking home 6-Oscars, including best picture and best director; and best casting, Jessie Buckley won best actress for Ham-net and Michael B. Jordan won best actor for Sinners. Canadians took home wins for best production design, animated feature, animated short film and makeup and hairstyling. “Golden”, the hit song from KPop Demon Hunters, made award history as the first K-pop song to win an Oscar for best original song.

Formula 1 and its governing body canceled Grand Prix races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia on safety grounds related to the Iran war. Both countries have been struck during Iran’s response after the United States and Israel launched a wave of attacks on Iran. The announcement was made early Sunday morning in Shanghai ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix.
