According to RCMP, a southbound truck driven by a 48‑year‑old Thompson woman attempted to pass a semi when it was unsafe to do so. As she pulled into the oncoming lane, her vehicle struck a northbound truck head‑on. That second truck was driven by a 23‑year‑old man from Gimli.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The Gimli man was taken to hospital with injuries that were described as non‑life‑threatening.
Investigators say weather and road conditions are believed to have played a role in the collision. Snowfall earlier that morning had created poor visibility and made passing especially hazardous along the remote northern route.
RCMP say no charges are expected, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Highway 280, a key link between Thompson and several northern communities, has seen multiple serious collisions in recent years, often tied to winter driving conditions and limited passing opportunities. Police are again urging drivers to slow down, use caution, and avoid passing unless the road ahead is completely clear.
