Manitoba Public Insurance is preparing for a busy summer as it opens registration for its condensed 2026 Driver Z program, giving teen drivers more opportunities to begin their licensing journey during the peak driving season. With summer traditionally being the most popular time for new drivers to get behind the wheel, MPI has expanded the program significantly — adding 600 extra spots for a total of 1,200 available seats, doubling last year’s capacity.
Course listings for the summer term will appear in the Driver Z Course Finder on Friday, May 8, allowing families to review available options and plan ahead. Because courses are offered only in select communities based on demand and instructor availability, MPI encourages students to check the tool early.
To be eligible for a registration window, students must sign up as a new MPI customer and purchase the Driver Education service at a broker or MPI Service Centre by end of day May 9. MPI’s updated registration system sorts eligible students into groups and assigns each a registration “window,” reducing the rush and stress of a single‑day sign‑up. During their assigned window, students can choose the course date and time that works best for them.
Only Manitoba high school students who are 15½ years old by the date of the Driver Z Knowledge Test are eligible to participate. Students can confirm eligibility by entering their school division, school, and birthday into the Course Finder. Parents and guardians may only register on a student’s behalf if written authorization is provided in advance.
All Summer 2026 courses will be delivered virtually, with 4.5‑hour classes held over two and a half weeks. Knowledge tests will take place at the hosting MPI Service Centre, and in‑car lessons will occur weekly after the Class 5 test is passed.
