As Emergency Preparedness Week continues, the City of Brandon is reminding residents that they can receive direct emergency notifications through the Brandon Alerts system. The service is designed to warn the public about situations that may require quick action — including tornado activity, chemical spills, toxic smoke, major fires, or other hazards that could affect neighbourhoods across the city.
Residents can register to receive alerts by text message, email, voice call, or pager, depending on their preference. The system also allows users to enter their home address so notifications can be targeted to specific areas, ensuring people only receive alerts that apply to their location. This is especially important as many households no longer rely on landlines for emergency communication.
The alerting system is used for both emergency and significant non‑emergency events, such as prolonged road closures, major police or fire activity, or situations where residents may need to shelter in place or avoid an area. Alerts are free to receive, though standard text messaging rates may apply depending on your mobile plan.
Brandon also maintains its outdoor siren network through the Brandon Emergency Alerting Program, which conducts a short monthly test on the first Wednesday of each month. When residents hear the alerting tone, they are advised to go indoors and tune in to local radio for updates.
Residents can sign up for Brandon Alerts by visiting the city’s notification portal at brandon.ca/emergencyalerts, where they can create an account, update contact information, or unsubscribe at any time.
