Manitoba officials are reminding rural property owners that if you rely on a private well, you are responsible for testing your own drinking water. The province says regular testing is the only way to catch contamination early, especially during spring runoff, heavy rain, or any time the water appears cloudy, tastes different, or has an unusual smell.
To help homeowners stay on top of water safety, Manitoba has released a series of step‑by‑step instructional videos showing how to collect a proper water sample, how to disinfect and maintain a well, and what to do if test results show bacterial contamination. The videos also explain how to access certified labs and how often testing should be done — ideally three times a year, or more frequently if conditions change.
The province notes that private wells are not monitored by municipal or provincial systems, meaning homeowners must take the lead on protecting their own drinking water. That includes regular inspections, proper sealing, and ensuring the well cap and casing remain in good condition.
Manitoba’s well‑safety education campaign is ongoing, with no set end date, as officials continue pushing for better awareness across rural communities.
