Manitoba is expanding its recruitment incentives for nurses and paramedics as rural and northern communities continue to face chronic staffing shortages — including several high‑vacancy sites across Westman. The Province says the new supports are aimed at stabilizing frontline coverage ahead of the summer surge, when emergency rooms and primary‑care clinics typically see increased demand.
Under the updated package, nurses and paramedics can receive up to $10,000 in signing bonuses for full‑time positions in eligible rural or northern communities, while part‑time roles offer up to $5,000. The Province is also offering relocation assistance ranging from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on whether the recruit is moving within Manitoba, from another province, or internationally.
The incentives come with return‑of‑service agreements, typically requiring 12 to 24 months of work in the assigned community. Leaving early triggers repayment on a prorated basis. Recruits must also meet Manitoba licensing requirements and provide receipts for moving expenses before funds are released.
The Province confirms the incentives apply to rural and northern sites, including communities within Prairie Mountain Health (Westman). Priority is being given to areas with persistent ER or primary‑care vacancies, a category that includes several Westman communities such as Virden, Souris, Glenboro, Killarney, Minnedosa, and Hamiota. Many of these sites have faced rotating closures or reduced hours in recent years.
Officials say the expanded supports are part of a broader effort to rebuild Manitoba’s rural health‑care workforce and reduce pressure on larger centres like Brandon, which often absorbs overflow when smaller ERs are short‑staffed.
