Brandon Police said they believe a man they found suffering from a serious head injury was struck by a machete last weekend, but they have not laid any charges despite an investigation that they believe led them to the spot where the attack occurred.
According to police, they were called to the 200 block of 3rd street just after 5:00 AM on Saturday, May 30. When they arrived, they found a 46-year-old man suffering from what they described as “a significant head injury believed to have been caused by a machete”. The victim told police he remembered being attacked from behind while outside a residence in the 100 block of 4th Street with a friend, but he was unable to identify the suspect and a 22-year-old acquaintance who was with him at the time of the incident declined to provide a statement or further information to investigators.
Police said they used a police service dog to track from the location where the victim was found. The track led officers to a residence in the 100 block of 4th Street, where police allege they found blood in the yard and near the rear entrance. Five individuals, including the 22-year-old acquaintance, were detained. All detained suspects were later released once sober.
“Despite these efforts,” police said in a media release, “investigators were unable to obtain information from the victim or witnesses that would assist in identifying a suspect. As all investigative avenues have been exhausted with the information available, the file has been closed.”
