Manitoba’s Independent Investigation Unit is looking into an incident in which RCMP said a firearm was discharged but no one was struck in MacGregor.
According to a release from the IIU, RCMP notified them after an incident on June 6 in which an intoxicated man had been throwing rocks at youths and had struck one of them in the head. Portage la Prairie RCMP were called in and found the suspect at a residence in the 100 block of Hampton Street East in MacGregor. Officers confronted the male and one RCMP member discharged his firearm.
Both RCMP and IIU said the suspect was air-lifted away from the scene, taken to Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg by STARS air ambulance. However, in their release, RCMP said the suspect’s hospitalization was not due to being hit by a bullet.
“The suspect – a 33-year-old MacGregor male – was not shot but did suffer an injury as a result of the firearm being discharged and was transported to hospital in Winnipeg via air ambulance, where he was treated and released,” RCMP said in their release. “No other injuries occurred.”
IIU has said it will not comment further as the investigation is ongoing.
