Many WestMan communities are already dealing with as much rain as they can handle, and the provincial flood watchdog believes more rain is on the way.
The latest flood bulletin from Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure’s Hydrologic Forecast Centre says a system is expected to keep bringing rain through the WestMan area and much of the rest of the province until June 12. They believe western Manitoba, including the Parkland Region, could see as much as 70 millimeters of rain before the system moves on.
“A flood warning for western Manitoba, including the Parkland region, remains in effect,” reads the latest flood bulletin. “The Hydrologic Forecast Centre has also issued an overland flood watch for parts of western, central and southeastern Manitoba, excluding areas already in a flood warning.”
Meanwhile, the RM of Swan Valley West is following in the footsteps of the RM of Minitonas and declaring a state of emergency due to flooding. They are asking residents to get to higher ground if possible and to avoid calling 9-1-1 unless they have a medical emergency.
“Many roads and culverts are already impassable and it will be a few days before all roads are passable again,” the RM said on their website. “We are aware of the damages and are currently making plans for repairs.”
Swan Valley West Reeve Bill Gade said as many as 20 roads were completely washed out as of 4:30 PM yesterday.
