A 71‑year‑old woman has died following a single‑vehicle crash on Highway 50 in the RM of Westlake‑Gladstone on June 22. Portage la Prairie RCMP were called to the scene around 7:40 a.m., where first responders found an SUV in a ditch with its wheels submerged in water.
Investigators say the vehicle had been travelling south from Duck Bay toward Portage la Prairie when it struck a bird. The impact caused the 76‑year‑old male driver to swerve off the roadway and into the ditch. He was not injured. The woman, who had been seated in the back, died at the scene despite emergency efforts.
RCMP continue to investigate the circumstances of the collision. Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors.
