With the threat of rising water and more rain in the forecast, the City of Brandon is not the only community trying to get ahead of any potential emergency.
The Town of Minnedosa and Sioux Valley Dakota Nation have both declared states of emergency due to rising floodwaters. Sioux Valley has also put out a call for more volunteers to help with sand bagging.
“The safety and well-being of our members remain our highest priority,” reads a release on Sioux Valley’s website. “Chief and Council, together with our Emergency Management Team and staff, are actively monitoring conditions, coordinating emergency response efforts, and working closely with provincial and federal partners to ensure the necessary supports and resources are available.”
Minnedosa, meanwhile, has said in a release on their website that they can expect the water level to rise just under two feet from where it currently sits. Their state of emergency will remain in place until August 4 with a provision to extend it by another 30 days if need be. They’ve received 60,000 sandbags and several “Tiger Tubes” so far.
Sioux Valley added in their release that residents should be prepared by “by ensuring emergency supplies, medications, and important documents are readily available.”
