Flood conditions at Sioux Valley Dakota Nation intensified overnight, forcing the closure of Highway 21 after water began flowing over the road. The community has been under a state of emergency since the weekend, with nearly 190 residents told to prepare for possible evacuation as heavy rain and runoff continue to strain local infrastructure.
Sioux Valley officials say water levels have risen quickly across low‑lying areas, prompting multiple road restrictions in and around the community. Cemetery Road was closed earlier this week, and emergency crews have been working around the clock to reinforce dikes, protect homes, and maintain access routes for responders. Additional sandbagging crews were requested Wednesday as the situation evolved.
The closure of Highway 21 marks the most significant transportation impact so far, cutting off a key north‑south link for residents, emergency vehicles, and farm traffic. Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure is monitoring the site and will reopen the highway only when water recedes and the road surface is deemed safe.
Drivers are asked to avoid the area and use alternate routes. Sioux Valley continues to issue daily flood notices as crews assess damage and prepare for more rain in the forecast.
