Another storm capable of producing tornadoes may be developing over Brandon, according to Environment Canada, and they’ve issued a yellow weather alert for a tornado warning for the city and several other communities in WestMan.
According to their website, they expect severe thunderstorms to initiate ahead of a low pressure system this afternoon and then track east out of the area early this evening. Strong winds, large hail and heavy rain are also possible.
“Once storms start to rotate, they’re capable of producing tornadoes,” said Environment Canada Regional Meteorologist Terri Lang. “It’s about wanting to air on the side of caution. Once these storms start rotating, the possibility of a tornado coming out is higher, so that’s why they warn people when we see storms rotating on radar.”
In the event of a tornado, or if a tornado warning is issued for your area, Environment Canada advises people to go indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from outside walls and windows, such as a basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet. Leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and other temporary or free-standing shelter, and move to a strong building if you can.
As a last resort, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris. Be prepared for severe weather. If you hear a roaring sound or see a funnel cloud, swirling debris near the ground, flying debris, or any threatening weather approaching, take cover immediately.
