One of the two boys who had been swept underwater at Nutimik Lake has been found dead according to RCMP, and the search continues for the second.
At a press conference today, RCMP thanked volunteers for all their help, as about 20 boats of volunteer searchers were out on the lake. They said at the press conference that while they had recovered the body of 10-year-old Maximo Au Ramirez, they had not yet found 13-year-old Aaron.
At that same press conference, an RCMP spokesperson read a statement from Haidee Ramirez and Roger Au, the children’s parents.
“We are going through horrible and unimaginable pain for our children,” they said. “What we have gone through is not humanly possible to understand. We are surviving only because of the help of those around us. We have so much gratitude for the people who are helping. The help is so overwhelming that it is hard to understand how a community can be so strong for us and help us so much. The support of everyone is truly what is sustaining our family.”
Searchers including the Manitoba RCMP Marine Unit, HEART, the Rosenort Fire Department, Turtle Aquatic Response Inc. and approximately 20 boats manned by volunteers continue to sweep the lake. The body of Maximo Au Ramirez was found about 300 yards from the falls at Nutimik Lake.
“We’ve got a lot of volunteers here today,” said Staff Sgt. Corey Meyers with the Lac du Bonnet RCMP. “Nothing truly in the lake is out of bounds for us.”
