After having to postpone their fogging due to the heavy rain that hit Brandon on Wednesday night, the City of Brandon announced today they had successfully finished their fogging for nuisance mosquitoes this morning.
In a social media post, the city said their crews completed the fogging operation at about 4:00 AM. They also said they had treated every area of the city except for buffer zones, which people were able to apply for ahead of time.
In addition to fogging, the city said crews will continue to monitor and treat standing water using a granular larvicide approved for mosquito control. They will treat standing water every two days as needed.
Nuisance mosquitoes are mosquitoes that are not capable of carrying West Nile virus.
“Residents can also help reduce mosquito populations around their properties by eliminating standing water, cleaning eavestroughs, covering rain barrels, filling low-lying areas, and treating problem areas with biological larvicide,” said the city in their release. “To reduce mosquito bites, consider using insect repellent, wearing light-coloured clothing, limiting outdoor activity between dusk and dawn, and spending time in screened-in areas when possible.”
