Meanwhile, the American labour market posted stronger-than-expected results. Employers added 162,000 jobs during August, more than double analyst forecasts, while the unemployment rate held steady at 4.1 per cent.
The contrasting reports suggest Canada’s labour market may be cooling while the U.S. economy continues to show resilience.

Ward 7 Challenger Enters Brandon Race
Quentin Robinson has officially entered Brandon’s municipal election, registering as a candidate in Ward 7.
Robinson is a familiar name to local voters after narrowly losing to Brandon West MLA Wayne Balcaen in the 2023 provincial election by just 89 votes.
He will challenge incumbent councillor Shawn Berry. Candidate nominations remain open until September 22.
Ward 4 Race Expands
Longtime city council observer James Epp has entered the Ward 4 race.
Epp says his goal is not necessarily to become a councillor but to ensure residents have an opportunity to vote rather than see the seat decided by acclamation.
He says elections provide an important measure of public support and civic engagement.
Cornwallis Reeve Seeks Full Mandate
In the RM of Cornwallis, current Reeve Mike Waddell is looking to build on the strong support he received following last year’s by-election.
Waddell secured more than 70 per cent of the vote after succeeding former Reeve Sam Hofer, who resigned in December.
The municipal election is scheduled for October 28. Waddell currently remains unopposed.
🚆 Ottawa Makes Record VIA Rail Investment
The federal government is investing $4.7 billion to purchase 313 new VIA Rail passenger cars built in Thunder Bay.
The new fleet will replace rail cars that are more than 70 years old and is expected to support approximately 700 jobs.
The investment marks the largest in VIA Rail’s history and coincides with continued planning for the proposed Alto high-speed rail project connecting Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City.

🚔 RCMP Arrest Forrest Man Following Standoff
Brandon RCMP safely arrested a 51-year-old Forrest man after a two-hour standoff Tuesday evening.
Police say the incident followed two early-morning break-ins in which the suspect allegedly entered residences and fled after being confronted by occupants.
Mounties later recovered three firearms and ammunition from the residence.
The man is facing break-and-enter charges along with several firearms-related offences.
⚖️ Woman Re-Arrested Over Alleged Forged Medical Note
Amber Fisher, a 42‑year‑old former chief administrative officer from Gilbert Plains has been re-arrested after RCMP allege she submitted a forged doctor’s note in an attempt to postpone a sentencing hearing.
Police say Fisher claimed she had been injured in a vehicle crash, but investigators found no record of the collision in any province.
RCMP determined the medical documentation was fraudulent.
Fisher was already awaiting sentencing in connection with a significant theft conviction.
🌾 Rain Helps Manitoba Crops as Harvest Progresses
Recent rainfall is providing a welcome boost to Manitoba crops as producers ramp up harvest activity across the province.
Soybeans are generally in the R5 to R7 growth stages, while canola harvest is underway in central and southwestern Manitoba.
Second-cut hay is approximately 90 per cent complete, and producers are reporting generally adequate forage supplies heading into winter.
The improved moisture conditions are expected to benefit soybean, corn and sunflower crops as the growing season enters its final weeks.
