An 18-year-old Winnipeg man is facing 19 criminal charges after an early morning incident in Neepawa that involved a stolen vehicle, an alleged assault on a police officer, and the discovery of a loaded sawed-off shotgun.
Spruce Plains RCMP were called to a convenience store on Main Street West in Neepawa at approximately 3:05 a.m. on Sept. 13 following reports of a possibly intoxicated man behaving aggressively toward store employees.
When officers arrived, they positioned their police vehicle behind a truck believed to belong to the suspect. Police say the driver then began reversing into the parked RCMP vehicle while an officer was still inside.
According to RCMP, the suspect subsequently drove forward in an apparent attempt to maneuver around the police vehicle and ignored repeated commands to stop. As additional officers arrived, the truck became boxed in within the parking lot, preventing any escape.
The male exited the vehicle and was arrested without further incident.
A search of the truck led to the discovery of a loaded sawed-off shotgun on the driver’s seat. Officers also found an open container of alcohol in the vehicle and say the suspect refused to provide a breath sample. Investigators later determined the truck had been reported stolen.
Jacob Guiboche, 18, of Winnipeg has been charged with 19 criminal offences, including assaulting a police officer with a weapon, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, impaired driving-related offences, multiple firearms violations, possession of stolen property, and several breaches of court-ordered conditions.
Guiboche was remanded into custody. He also received tickets for driving while disqualified and having open liquor in a motor vehicle, carrying combined fines of $909.
