Residents along Lake Manitoba and Lake Winnipeg shorelines are being urged to prepare for potentially hazardous conditions as strong winds move across the province.
The Manitoba government has issued a wind alert for much of central and southern Manitoba, with strong north to northwesterly winds expected to continue through Tuesday. According to Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure’s Hydrologic Forecast Centre, sustained winds of 45 to 60 km/h are forecast initially, strengthening to 65 to 75 km/h early Tuesday. Wind gusts could reach between 85 and 95 km/h.
The powerful winds are expected to generate significant wave action and water level increases along vulnerable shorelines. Areas of concern include the south basin of Lake Manitoba, as well as communities near Gimli on the west shore and Victoria Beach on the east shore of Lake Winnipeg.
Officials warn that temporary water level increases of five feet or more are possible in the most heavily affected locations. Property owners along lakeshore areas are encouraged to secure boats, docks, and outdoor equipment, and take other precautions to protect property from wave damage and shoreline flooding.
