The governments of Canada and Manitoba are encouraging residents to learn more about where their food comes from as the province marks the 12th annual Farm and Food Awareness Week from September 20 to 25.
This year’s theme, “Community and Agriculture: Growing Together,” highlights the close connection between local farmers, food producers and the communities they serve. Federal Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Heath MacDonald says the week is an opportunity to recognize the work of farmers, producers and food workers who help deliver safe, high-quality food to Canadian families every day.
Manitoba Agriculture Minister Ron Kostyshyn says agriculture remains a vital part of Manitoba’s economy and local communities, noting that choosing local food helps strengthen those ties while supporting producers across the province.
Several events are planned throughout the week, including Discover Agriculture on the Farm on September 20 at the Bruce D. Campbell Farm and Food Discovery Centre. The free, family-friendly event will feature interactive exhibits and educational experiences designed to help visitors learn more about Manitoba agriculture. Harvest Manitoba will also be collecting non-perishable food donations in support of local food security initiatives.
The week will also include Local Food Day on September 23, celebrating Manitoba farmers and the importance of local ingredients in supporting families and communities.
The two governments are also investing $260,000 through the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership to support additional seasons of Great Tastes of Manitoba, a program that promotes food grown and produced in the province.
Officials say ongoing investments in agriculture awareness, innovation and research are helping strengthen Manitoba’s agri-food sector while fostering greater connections between consumers and local producers.
