Swine Innovation Porc (SIP), with support from the Pork Promotion and Research Agency, is inviting researchers across Canada to submit proposals for projects aimed at strengthening the country’s pork industry.
The Advancing Swine Research Call for Proposals is designed to support practical research that helps improve the resilience, sustainability and competitiveness of Canadian pork production. The initiative also seeks to leverage industry funding by attracting additional research expertise and investment from partner organizations and other funding programs.
SIP Chair Mark Ferguson says the program allows the pork sector to focus research dollars on some of the most pressing challenges facing producers and processors. He says bringing industry priorities together with research expertise can help deliver practical solutions that support the sector’s long-term success.
This year’s call is focused on six priority areas, including endemic animal diseases, antimicrobial use and resistance, biosecurity, barn technology and design, pork safety and quality, and improving energy and water efficiency.
Two streams of funding are available. Discovery and Applied Research projects can receive up to $150,000 over three years, while shorter-term Quick Win projects can receive up to $50,000 and are generally completed within one year.
Dr. Andrew Van Kessel, Chair of SIP’s Science Advisory Body, says the dual-stream approach provides flexibility to support both long-term innovation and targeted projects that can deliver timely results for producers.
The application process begins with a Letter of Intent, which must be submitted by November 13 at 4 p.m. Eastern Time. Eligible applicants include universities, colleges, research organizations and government research institutions with relevant experience.
