The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has issued a nationwide recall of several organic cheese products sold under the Farm Boy, L’AncĂȘtre and Life Smart brands because of possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. No illnesses have been reported.
The recall was triggered by CFIA test results and includes a variety of cheddar, Swiss and mozzarella cheese products. Consumers are being advised not to eat the affected items and to either discard them or return them to the place of purchase.
Manitoba Consumers Should Take Note
While some of the recalled brands may be more commonly associated with eastern Canada, the CFIA says the affected products were distributed nationally, meaning they may have been available for purchase in Manitoba. Consumers are encouraged to check their refrigerators and freezers against the recall information.
Food contaminated with listeria may not look or smell spoiled but can still cause illness. Symptoms can include fever, nausea, vomiting, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness. Older adults, pregnant individuals and those with weakened immune systems are at greater risk of serious complications.
