Brandon’s Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation (BNRC) has received $100,000 from the province to support several services.
Per a press release, the funding will help expand its Creation Nation Makerspace and launch a program to refurbish and resell gently used medical equipment.
“The medical equipment restoration social enterprise at the BNRC’s Creation Nation Makerspace is about creating opportunities for people to showcase their skills and talents while returning a much-needed, affordable product to our community,” said Karra Burney, executive director of BNRC.
The $141,574 refurbishment project will establish partnerships with local hospitals and care homes to secure equipment donations and raise awareness of the program.
Community members will assist with refurbishing equipment and running the makerspace.
Ted Dzeogaan, a BNRC board member, said reusing gently used equipment can save people money while also helping reduce waste.
“This program helps people, it reduces waste, it’s a medical program, it’s an affordability program, it’s an environmental program, but most of all it’s a community building program.”
The funding comes through the province’s Ground Up – Safe Healthy Communities for ALL program.
Municipal and Northern Relations Minister Glen Simard said the province recognizes the value of funding projects that address diverse community needs.
“Residents gain skills, mentorship and a path to employment, while families gain access to gently used walkers, wheelchairs and other equipment at a lower cost. Our government supports projects that reflect local priorities, and this project turns community participation into practical results.”
