The 2025-2026 financial year for Brandon School Division (BSD) saw a surplus of roughly $400,000.
BDO Canada LLP presented its financial statement at the current board of trustees’ final meeting on Monday, as the school division spent less than anticipated.
“Expenses increased by about six million dollars from the prior year, but were actually two million dollars below budget,” said BDO Canada LLP manager Jarett Kowaluk.
Kowaluk credited BSD for keeping expenses lower in today’s economic environment.
The division also saw differences in operating revenue from provincial funding and municipal taxes.
“Operating revenues increased by approximately $6 million from the prior year, and [that] was $1 million above what was budgeted for.
This was a result of some additional funding received from the province of about $3 million, and that was partially offset by $2 million less in municipal property tax revenue,” said Kowaluk.
In total, BSD had an additional $2.4 million, of which $2 million was transferred to capital to fund asset purchases and debt repayments.
For the entire school year, Kowaluk said BSD spent roughly $19.5 million on capital assets.
Beyond the financial results, BDO Canada LLP reported no significant risks to BSD’s planning process, internal controls or audit adjustments.
A copy of the financial statement has not been published on BSD’s website.
