The sudden announcement of a new oncologist for the Westman Region isn’t adding up for one local MLA.
Following the announced departure of oncologist Dr. Brady Anderson from Western Manitoba Cancer Centre in mid-November, CancerCare Manitoba released a statement on Sunday stating that a new oncologist will begin in early December.
“I was caught off guard that this happened so quickly,” said Brandon West MLA Wayne Balcaen on Monday.
Balcaen questioned how CancerCare Manitoba found a new oncologist so quickly after Anderson had lobbied for support over the past two years.
“He previously tried advocating for himself with the government and CancerCare Manitoba, but all I encountered were roadblocks and apathy toward his situation. So, I find it curious that this announcement is being made all of a sudden.”
In an interview with Pattison Media, Anderson said CancerCare Manitoba had promised support but failed to follow through.
“I was promised additional support in the form of physician extenders, such as clinical assistants or physician assistants, who could take on some of the clinical duties and help ease the workload.”
Anderson also said the team knew recruiting a second oncologist would take time, further raising questions about Sunday’s sudden announcement.
From his understanding, Balcaen said Anderson indicated two oncologists would have been sufficient to serve the region.
“This would have provided administrative relief and help in other areas he required.”
Anderson said the incoming oncologist is being recruited from overseas but will not be treating as many disease sites.
Pattison Media reached out to CancerCare Manitoba for a statement on Friday but received no response by Monday’s deadline.
On its social media, CancerCare Manitoba says patient appointments and care won’t be interrupted following Anderson’s departure.
“Patients will continue to receive care at their usual CancerCare Manitoba location, as appropriate to their treatment needs. Our clinical teams will continue to work directly with patients to coordinate appointments and provide ongoing support throughout this transition.”
CancerCare Manitoba currently staffs two family practice physicians with specialized training in oncology and three radiation oncologists who support patients in the region.
