Manitoba’s spring floods ranked third on the list of top weather stories of 2022.
A series of snow and rainstorms forced 45 municipalities and 9 First Nations to delcare local states of emergency, and in Winnipeg, the city received more than 330 mm of precipitation, almost four times the normal amount which shattered a 125-year-old record.
Envrionment Canada’s Dave Phillips says Hurricane Fiona topped the list, followed by May thunderstorms in Ontario and Quebec in second. He says city flooding is on the increase. “River flooding was always Canadian, but those kinds of urban floods – street floods – this is the new flood.”
