The Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba has made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s Demolition Derby at the Manitoba Summer Fair.
The Derby, which has been a staple at the Fair for close to thirty years, was also cancelled last year when entries hit an all time low and unfortunately interest has not rebounded this past year as the Exhibition had hoped.
“We know that this will come as an extreme disappointment, not only to the local demo derby community, but also to the many fans that have flocked to the event at the Fair each year,” says Provincial Exhibition, General Manager, Mark Humphries. “This was a decision that we have not taken lightly,” he went on to say. “We had hoped that entries would improve this spring but that never materialized.”
While the Derby at the Fair will not be going ahead next month, the Exhibition is still exploring a number of options, says Humphries. “One is to possibly reschedule as a stand-alone event in Brandon…..or come back in 2024 with a bigger and better Derby,” he says. “Either way the Provincial Exhibition is confident that the Derby has not seen its last days in Brandon and with the help and support of the local community, we expect to be back.”
The 2023 Manitoba Summer Fair is scheduled for June 7th to 11th and will feature fantastic fair food, an exciting Midway and will see the return of the Summer Saloon in the Keystone Centre’s Manitoba Room.
Tickets to the Fair are on sale now at www.provincialexhibition.com or at both the Brandon and Minnedosa Heritage Co-op Food Stores.
