Parks Canada will be strengthening its Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) program in Riding Mountain National Park for 2023.
These changes are in response to the positive test result confirmed from Clear Lake, for zebra mussel environmental DNA (eDNA).
The boating season will start on June 1, 2023.
To obtain a permit to use a trailered vessel in Clear Lake for 2023 boat users must:
1. NOT have been in any other water body in 2023
2. PASS an initial inspection before June 15
Boats that meet the requirements will have a tag installed that attaches the boat to their trailer. This tag assures park staff that the vessel has not been in another water body and poses no risk of bringing aquatic invasive species with it. If this tag is removed, cut, or tampered with, the boat will not be allowed to launch in Clear Lake for the remainder of the 2023 season.
Information sessions regarding how to proceed as a lake user for 2023 are scheduled to take place at the following times and locations:
– Tuesday, May 9, 7:00 pm- Dauphin Best Western Plus, 50 Eric Irwin Way, Dauphin, MB
– Wednesday, May 10, 7:00 pm – Onanole Recreation Centre, 386 Central Rd, Onanole, MB
– Thursday, May 11, 7:00 pm – Brandon University, 270 18th St, Brandon, MB (Room CHO 212 is in the Clark Hall building on campus.)
Parks Canada will also be bolstering the inspection and decontamination program for self-propelled watercraft, beach toys, etc. All canoes, kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, inflatables, beach toys and all other items to be used in the waters of the national park will be required to undergo an inspection, and if needed, decontamination process before being allowed to launch inside the park.
This balanced approach will help ensure the long-term health of Clear Lake remains intact. Parks Canada appreciates the strong connections people have to this lake and area. Parks Canada sought input from Indigenous partners, governments, and stakeholders including the tourism industry, local business community, and townsite cottage and cabin owners. The overarching message we heard is to protect the health of Clear Lake.
This enhancement to the existing AIS program helps mitigate the threat from aquatic invasive species while allowing visitors to access the lake in a safe and sustainable manner.
These interim changes are in place for the 2023 season and are subject to further change should conditions require.
