With the summer season now officially in full swing, the Manitoba RCMP would like to remind everyone to be safe on roadways and while enjoying the beautiful lakes and rivers throughout the province.
So far this year, 64 people have died in motor vehicle collisions in Manitoba. This includes 16 people who died in a collision that occurred on June 15, 2023. This is well above the number of people who died on Manitoba roads last year at this time (33) and above the five-year average (34).
With increased traffic expected on our highways as Manitobans head to beaches, cottages, camp sites, and other holiday destinations, we can’t stress enough the importance of the following:
– drive sober
– wear a seatbelt
– slow down and drive to conditions
– be cautious and always aware of your surroundings
– pay attention to the road at all times
– keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead of you
– put your cellphone away
Motorists can expect to see increased patrols and sobriety checkstops throughout the province as officers continue their efforts to help keep roads safe this long weekend.
Eight Manitobans have already lost their lives due to drowning this year. Whether you are swimming, boating or on a sandy beach; being water smart is essential to having a safe time when on, or near, lakes and rivers.
In partnership with the Life Saving Society, here are important safety tips:
– Wear your lifejacket or Personal Floatation Device (PFD)
– Learn to swim
– Always swim with a buddy
– Children and non-swimmers should always be supervised around water
– Be aware of cold-water risks
– Alcohol/drugs and water don’t mix – never swim or operate a boat or any other watercraft while impaired
