Manitoba’s election campaign is expected to continue the focus on the economy and health-care today (Sept 14).
The Progressive Conservatives are set to make an announcement at a movie production studio – and NDP Leader Wab Kinew is scheduled to speak outside Victoria Hospital in Winnipeg.
On Wednesday, the New Democrats promised to improve cardiac care at Winnipeg’s St. Boniface Hospital. Kinew said he would spend $5 million a year to set up a centre of excellence for cardiac care. The money would go to hiring five more perfusionists, who operate machinery used during open-heart surgeries, as well as specialists, researchers and other workers.
Meanwhile, Tory leader Heather Stefanson told the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce the province’s tax rates must come down in order to compete with other provinces. She pledged again that if re-elected, her party would make major tax cuts, including eliminating the business payroll tax and reducing personal income taxes.
She said the province must be competitive with tax rates in Saskatchewan and Alberta in order to attract jobs, and keep more young people from leaving.

And an election Town Hall meeting is planned for next Thursday, September 21 in Brandon.
Hosted by the Community Wellness Collaborative, it’ll be held in at City Hall on 9th Street from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.
All the candidates from the Brandon East, Brandon West and Spruce Woods ridings are expected to attend, except for Spruce Woods NDP candidate Melissa Ghidoni.

The provincial election will be held on October 3rd. Advance polls open Saturday, September 23rd and will run until September 30th.
Manitoba voters can register or update their information until today (Sept 14) to get on the voters list. Voting is faster and easier when registered before the election, but Manitobans can still register at the poll when they vote.
Registered voters will receive a voter information card in the mail. Voters who have not received their cards or received a card with incorrect information can visit Elections Manitoba – Home or contact their local election office to register or update their information until 8:00 pm today, Sept. 14.
Voters are encouraged to bring their voter information card, which can be used as one piece of ID. All voters require ID to vote, either one piece of government-issued photo ID or two other pieces. There are many options. A complete list of acceptable ID is available on the Elections Manitoba website.
