-The Swift Current Broncos downed the Brandon Wheat Kings 6-2 on Wednesday (Oct 4). Five different Broncos scored, and the Wheat Kings managed just 24 shots on goal to 39 for the Broncos. Brandon’s Ethan Eskit stopped 33 of 39 shots he faced, while Roger McQueen and Brett Hyland did the scoring for the Wheat Kings. Up next for Brandon, a home game Saturday against the Calgary Hitmen before they head off on a lengthy road swing.
-Wenatchee Wild head coach Kevin Constantine has been suspended indefinitely after an independent investigation determined he violated Western Hockey League regulations and policies by making derogatory comments of a discriminatory nature. He’ll be required to apply for reinstatement to the commissioner should he seek a return to coaching in the league. Constantine will not be eligible to apply until 2025 at the earliest.
-The Winnipeg hope to wrap-up their pre-season schedule with a win over the Ottawa Senators tonight. The Jets open the regular season next Wednesday in Calgary.
-Alberta rock band Nickelback is to perform at Commonwealth Stadium when the Edmonton Oilers host the Calgary Flames in the NHL’s Heritage Classic. They’ll play during the second intermission of the outdoor game on October 29th. This year’s Heritage Classic will mark the 20th anniversary of the NHL’s first-ever regular-season outdoor game, which was also played in Edmonton.
-The Toronto Blue Jays have been eliminated from the post-season. They lost 2-0 Wednesday as the Minnesota Twins swept their best-of-three wildcard series. Also last night, the Texas Rangers, Arizona Diamondbacks and Philadelphia Phillies all advanced to the divisional round which opens with a four-game slate on Saturday. There are no MLB games today.
-The 2030 men’s soccer World Cup is set to feature games in six countries on three continents. FIFA reached an agreement to accept a bid spearheaded by co-hosts Spain, Portugal and Morocco, that’ll also include playing some games in South America. The unique format will allow the tournament to celebrate its 100th anniversary in Uruguay, which hosted and won the first World Cup in 1930.
-Canada scored a three-set win over host China to improve to 3-and-1 at the men’s volleyball Olympic qualification tournament. Canada is in second in Pool C heading into today’s game against Bulgaria. The top two countries from each of the tournament’s three pools will advance to the 2024 Paris Olympics.
-and Week 5 of the NFL begins tonight with the winless Chicago Bears (0-and-4) in Washington against the 2-and-2 Commanders.
