On October 5, 2023, at approximately 5:00 pm, police received a report of a vehicle-cyclist collision that occurred in the 2800 block of Victoria Avenue.
Officers attended the collision and located the victim, a 15-year-old male in the boulevard. He had been struck by a vehicle while he was cycling north across Victoria Avenue. He was transport via ambulance to hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The victim was later identified as Antoine Sutherland who had been biking home from Vincent Massey High School.
The 24-year-old male driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene and waited for police and emergency responders. The driver of the vehicle was not injured.
The investigation conducted by members of the Brandon Police Service Traffic Section, Forensic Identification Unit and a Collision Analyst and has determined that the vehicle, being driven by the 24-year-old male from Brandon, was travelling westbound on Victoria Avenue at more than twice the legal speed limit when it struck the cyclist.
On December 27, 2023, following consultation with crown prosecutors, police arrested the 24-year-old male driver. He was released to appear in court on February 26, 2024, on a charge of Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle Causing Death.
