-The Brandon Wheat Kings gave up four unanswered third period goals and lost 7-3 to the Medicine Hat Tigers on Sunday. Rylen Roersma, Brett Hyland and Joby Baumuller scored for the Wheat Kings who were outshot 38-28 by the Tigers. Last Saturday, Brandon blanked Lethbridge 6-0. Ethan Eskit made 38 saves for his first career shutout. Next up for the Wheat Kings is a three-in-three stretch through Alberta, starting with a trip to Calgary to play the Hitmen on Friday, January 26th.
-The Brandon AAA U18 Wheat Kings won their 19th straight game Sunday with a 4-0 win over the Interlake Lightning. Matthew Michta stopped all 25 shots he faced to pick up his 16th win of the season and his second shutout. Brandon remains in first place in the league at 31-0-and-1 with 63 points.
-The Westman Wildcats beat the Pembina Valley Hawks 6-1 in Hartney over the weekend. The Wildcats (16-7-1) and Yellowhead Chiefs are tied for second place in the Manitoba Female U18 AAA Hockey League. Both teams are four points back of the first place Winnipeg Ice.
-The Winnipeg Jets visit the Eastern Conference leading Boston Bruins tonight. Winnipeg edged Ottawa 2-1 in overtime on Saturday for their 2nd win in-a-row.
-The Brandon University Bobcats men’s team beat the University of Saskatchewan Huskies twice this past weekend – 80-62 and 78-71. The men’s squad improved to 12-and-4. The women dropped both of their games 108-53 and 105-41. In volleyball action – the Bobcats men’s team lost their first match 3-1 against Trinity Western, but took the second 3-2. The women’s team was blanked twice at 3-0. And at the Canada West Curling Championships – the BU men went 2-and-3 – while the women were 0-and-5.
-Ottawa’s Rachel Homan beat Switzerland 5-4 in an extra end to win the women’s final at the Grand Slam of Curling’s Canadian Open. Earlier on Sunday, Scotland beat Canada’s Brendan Bottcher 6-5 to win the men’s title.
-and the NFL Conference Championships are set. On Sunday – the Baltimore Ravens will host the Kansas City Chiefs for the AFC crown – and the Detroit Lions will visit the San Francisco 49’ers for the NFC title. The winners advance to the Super Bowl on February 11th.
