The Brandon University men’s volleyball team dominated the Calgary Dinos in their Canada West home opener on Friday night.
Frank Jones had a match-high 12 kills and added four blocks as the fourth-ranked Bobcats swept the seventh-ranked Dinos in straight sets.
Set scores were 25-14, 25-17 and 25-17.
"We really played well as a team. There were some things that we can work on because no game is perfect, but we came out and we went hard and didn’t let up until we finished the match," said Jones.
"I was real pleased with our effort. We came out right from the first point ready to play," added coach Grant Wilson. Everybody was into it and we were able to get some guys off the bench and get some good quality minutes. Overall, I was extremely pleased with the start."
Sebastien Steigmeier scored 10 kills for BU, who improved their record to 3-0.
On the women’ side, the Lady ‘Cats pulled off a five-set come from behind victory over the sixth-ranked Dinos.
Set scores were 18-25, 17-25, 25-19, 25-23 and 15-8.
Brandon’s lineup change in the third cued the comeback with freshman Nikki Majewski and hometown product Courtney Roberts stepping in with Majewski getting eight kills and Roberts recording six kills.
"It was so much fun," said Majewski. "I was so excited for the entire week for this game and getting in and playing was a dream come true."
"The first group wanted to do so well in front of our home crowd and you could just feel the disappointment wearing on them a little bit as we went through the second set, so we had to do something," added coach Lee Carter. "Nikki is really bubbly and Courtney is playing at home, so it just made sense to give those two a try and they both performed awesome for us."
Shanlee McLennan finished with 20 kills, one shy of tying the school record for Brandon, who sit with a record of 2-1.
The rematches go at 5 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. on Saturday at the Healthy Living Centre.
