A steal of two in the eighth and final end lifted Matt Dunstone to a 6-4 win over his Granite clubmate Cole Peters in the Junior Men’s Final at the Sun Life Financial Junior Challenge Sunday at the Brandon Curling Club.
The Dunstone team earned $2,500 with the win.
Dunstone had defeated American Korey Dropkin 7-1 and Peters topped Jordan Smith of the Granite 6-4 in the semifinals.
Meanwhile, Minnesota’s Cory Christensen repeated as Junior Women’s champion, defeating Kristy Watling of East St. Paul 5-4 in an extra end in the final.
Christensen earned her spot in the final with a 6-2 win over Winnipeg’s Beth Peterson while Watling defeated Shannon Birchard 8-2 in the other semifinal.
Christensen also earned $2,500 with the win.

Barb Spencer of Assiniboine-Memorial has become the third team to qualify for the Provincial Women’s Curling Championship.
Spencer defeated clubmate Joelle Brown 9-2 Sunday night in the final of the Scotties Berth Bonspiel in Swan Lake.
Earlier, Spencer defeated Jennifer Clark-Rouire 9-3 and Brown topped Brandon’s Stacey Fordyce 9-4 in the semifinals.
Spencer joins Jennifer Jones and Michelle Montford as teams headed to the Provincial Scottes in Winkler.

The playoff round is on tap Monday at the World and Manitoba Curling Tour’s Dauphin Clinic Pharmacy Classic.
Brandon’s Steve Irwin will face Regina’s Scott Bitz in one of the quarter-finals, while the other games have Scott Ramsay against Jeff Hartung, Ray Baker taking on Randy Bryden and Greg Todoruk versus Ryan Hyde.
The semifinal are at 12 p.m., and the championship final at 3 p.m.

Saskatchewan’s Max Kirkpatrick won the Canadian Mixed Curling title Saturday in North Bay.
Kirkpatrick defeated Jamie Koe of the Northwest Territories 7-4 in the final.
