-The Olympic games begin in Paris today and will run until August 11th. The opening ceremonies, poised to be the largest in Olympics history, start at 12:30 pm Manitoba time. Six Manitobans will compete in the Olympics including Winnipeg’s Skylar Park (taekwondo), Kelsey Wog (swimming), Shae La Roche (water polo) & Luke Herr (volleyball); Tyler Mislawchuk of Oak Bluff (triathlon) and Steinbach’s Eric Loeppky (volleyball). Desiree Scott of Winnipeg is an alternate with the women’s soccer team.
-According to predictions – Canada is expected to take home 21 medals – seven gold, nine silver and five bronze – three fewer than in Tokyo in 2020. The United States is the favourite to top the medal count with a projection of 112.
-Yesterday, the Canadian women’s Olympic soccer team beat New Zealand 2-1. Canada will next play second-ranked France on Sunday – before taking on Colombia on Wednesday. Canada is looking to return to the Olympic podium for the fourth straight time.
-In the South West Baseball League playoffs – the Boissevain Centennials blanked Wawanesa Brewers 8-0 in Game 1 of their best-of-5 semi-final series on Thursday.
-There were three games Thursday in the Border Baseball League playoffs. In the West Division – Pilot Mound beat Clearwater 3-1 to take a 2-0 lead in their best-of-5 semi-final, and Baldur downed Cartwright to tie their semi-final series at a 1-1. In the East Division – Winkler topped Morden 12-2 in Game 1 of their semi-final series.
-and in the CFL – the Montreal Alouettes improved to 6-and-1 with a 20-16 win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders who fell to 5-and-2. The 2-and-5 Winnipeg Blue Bombers visit the 3-and-3 Toronto Argonauts tomorrow night.
