Two of the Brandon Wheat Kings three graduating players from 2023-24 had already found their next hockey home heading into August. Now the last member of their 2003-born cohort has officially decided where to take the next steps in his hockey career.
Forward Jayden Wiens has agreed to join the Mount Royal Cougars in the U Sports hockey circuit next season. After the conclusion of the season, he mentioned he was weighing offers from several schools.
Though he played just one season in Brandon, it was a memorable one for Wiens. He posted career highs in goals (25) and points (44) while serving as an alternate captain. He continued to be a valuable member of the team into the playoffs, posting three goals and an assist in three games.
Some of Wiens’s highlights with the Wheat Kings include scoring a shootout winner on his very first shootout attempt to secure a comeback victory over Moose Jaw, and scoring the overtime winner in his 200th career game on December 27, 2023.
Wiens began his WHL career with the Saskatoon Blades and spent much of his tenure in the league with that organization. He ended up playing 233 WHL games spread over four seasons. The Wheat Kings acquired Wiens in a swap with the Blades that sent two draft picks the other way.
Previously, 2003-born captain Brett Hyland had signed with the AHL’s Hershey Bears this offseason, while graduating defenseman Jackson DeSouza had signed a pro contract in Norway.
