If you were planning to get outdoors over the long weekend, the provincial government is making that just a bit easier. The province announced today they would be offering free entry to all provincial parks from August 30 to September 2.
“Our government is covering provincial park entry fees so all Manitobans can enjoy the outdoors this weekend,” said Environment and Climate Change Minister Tracy Schmidt. “Manitoba has over 90 provincial parks to enjoy hiking, camping or whatever outdoor adventure you choose. As we move into September, there are still a lot of outdoor activities to enjoy, and with free entry, this is a great time to get out and visit our beautiful provincial parks.”
Although visitors to provincial parks won’t require a vehicle permit, nightly camping fees still apply. National parks are not part of this initiative, so those parks will still require an entry fee.
In a release, the province said park interpreters will offer free tours, star gazing, guided paddles and other family programs to connect to the natural features, culture and history in provincial parks.
The release added that because the emerald ash borer has been confirmed in Winnipeg, no firewood can be transported outside the city. It also reminded the public to be diligent about cleaning any boats or kayaks they bring with them so as not to spread aquatic invasive species.
