A traffic stop on the Trans Canada Highway turned into a sizable bust for the RCMP not far from Portage La Prairie. Police say they conducted a stop, searched a vehicle, and seized about 600 kilograms of illicit cannabis.
According to a release by RCMP, officers pulled a commercial vehicle over at about 12:25 PM on September 4. The vehicle was headed east and traveling through the RM of Portage la Prairie.
The resulting search of the vehicle led to the discovery of the huge haul of cannabis. Officers arrested a 65-year-old male, from Toronto, who will face charges under the Cannabis Act, Excise Act, and Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Control Act.
“We continue to enforce the laws against illicit cannabis as it’s possession is a criminal offence and is an issue of public safety,” said Inspector Michael Gagliardi, Officer in Charge of RCMP Traffic Services. “Anyone purchasing illicit cannabis does not know where it came from or what it could be cut with. Often, illicit cannabis is associated with organized crime and all the other criminal elements that entails.”
RCMP continue to investigate.
